It’s a battle that has been brewing for decades. People want to know who would win in a protein showdown – whey protein or soy protein. There are no more popular types of protein available than these two. Even though both are protein, there are some marked differences that every body builder or athlete should know about. This byproduct of cheese production is well known for helping people to add muscle mass and even helps the body to avoid going into a catabolic (muscle wasting) state. Since whey protein helps to gain muscle and also prevents muscle wasting, it’s easy to understand why so many bodybuilders rely on whey as their primary source of protein when they take supplements.

So, Which is Best?

It’s clear that both soy protein and whey protein have benefits, so which one is better? Well, there’s really no better when it comes to protein, as all of them can be beneficial. But if you’re talking about which protein is more beneficial for gaining muscle mass, then whey is clearly the top contender. Whey protein has a more complete protein profile, and it is more readily absorbed into the blood stream, so it’s a crucial component for any plan to pack on more muscle mass. Whey protein is derived from milk and is typically taken as a protein powder, so it’s convenient and relatively easy to get.

Soy protein is not without its good points too. Though, it may not help you to build as much muscle mass as whey, it should still be a part of your diet for total health and vitality. It’s probably best to include just a serving or two of soy protein each day, though, as some studies show that when it is consumed in large amounts that it may actually inhibit muscle growth.

It’s good to have a diet that is rich in a wide variety of proteins, but if your goal is to gain as much muscle mass as possible, you need to make whey protein a staple of your diet. Whether you get your whey from a protein powder or a ready to drink supplement, you’ll want to make sure that you put much more emphasis on consuming whey protein rather than soy protein.
