Chapter 1- The Promise
As I stare into the hours of darkness, I wonder what would happen with my life. “Lanna, we must go now or they’ll continue to attack us!” Shivers went down my back as the words rolled down my friend, Emily’s tongue.
“Y-yeah one second, Emily.” I looked down at the brown dirt as one last tear rolled down my rose soft cheek and dropped on the gray cement gravestone of my mother’s. The tear made a puddle were the name, “Justine Rose” was.
“Bye mommy. I promise I’ll hurt them for you…whatever it takes.” I kneeled down and placed the violet rose on the words Rest in Peace and walked back to my horse, Lilina. My horse had a butterscotch color, with brown spots on her. She was beautiful, and a strong horse, too.
“Finally, let’s get a move on! The Mirth’s power almost drained all MY power!”
Not looking at her, as she showed no compassion towards my feelings I said, “I’m truly sorry. It’ll be about 20 minutes until we get to shelter.”
The rest of the trip was in silence. The cool breeze blew through my long brown hair as I kept a tight grip on Lilina. The ride was rutted. It made being on a boat in the middle of a whirlpool sound delightful right now. The malicious wind kept getting my hair into my face, which I just spat out every five minutes or so. It seemed like centuries to get to the kingdom, but we finally made it.
The large bridge dropped, pushing bitter cool wind at us, which made me chatter my teeth. Our steeds galloped onto the bridge, making a clatter that sounding like two coconuts being banged together several times. The roses around the outsized castles were picturesque. The crimsonness of the roses was unexplainable. It seemed all of them had fresh dew poured on them because they had drops of crystal water on them, looking like they were crying. I looked up as we were being led into castle. The turret had an auburn style to it, almost as if it were made in the fall. The bricks were perfectly in place and I couldn’t spot one flaw in the castle. As we were getting off our horses and handing the rails to the stable master, something occurred to me. I’m only a 14 year old girl who just lost her mom and whose dad is the Mirth King. I’ll never have a normal life.
Everywhere I’ll go I’ll always be Lanna Marie Rose, half Mirth, and half Jave. Mirths are the evilest kind in the Freeges. The Freeges is the Mirth’s quarters. They practice to eradicate and wound Javes in the Freeges. They use their power to abstract exposed Jave’s powers, hoping to gather enough to control us. Only the most valiant and powerful Javes go to the Freeges hoping to stop my father and his army. None have seceded so far. Javes on the other hand, I wish I can forever and always be, just a Jave. They live in the Brokes were they try to find cures for diseases and ways to exterminate the Mirths. “Lanna, we’re here!”
Emily hollered in my ear. My day dreams burst like a bubble. “Oh, thanks. Hopefully they have an ear doctor here.” I said with seriousness. Emily has been my best friend since the day of birth. Our mothers were best friends also. They were both Javes, and worked at the same unit. When Mother died, Emily’s mom was there for me. She let me live with her family for a little bit, but we had to leave for a new mission. A memory flashed into my head, like lightning.
“This is Emily, sweetie.” Mommy said in a pleasant voice.
“Hi, I’m Emily and I like puppies!” Emily responded in a cute voice.
“Hey! I like puppies too!” said while flapping my arms up and down eagerly. We held hands and skipped down the road, leaving our mothers to talk about whatever they pleased. The flashback disappeared when she poked my arm to amuse herself. Emily knows I’m part Mirth, and accepts it. She’s the bubbly blonde that knows how to bright up my day. Sometimes though, she can get over competitive with boys.
She wasn’t considered ugly, just decent. Yes, she had split ends, but she had straight white teeth, and was tall. The stable master pointed to wooden stairs and said, “Prince Richard is that way!”
I nodded my head and smiled, then went to the stairs. I was in front, while Emily followed. The stairs were very steep and wobbly, like play house stairs, only these stairs don’t have nets. We found a wooden door and suddenly heard a familiar voice. “You may enter!” said an earsplitting booming voice coming from the door, soon to be recognized as Prince Richard II. He had blonde hair, a killer grin, and he was well-built.
“Why, hello Lanna and Emily, long time, no see.” He said smirking, knowing he was being sarcastic, because we saw him about a week ago.
“Hello Richard.” I said as we staggered into his den where he likes to unwind when kingdom problems become too stressful. Oh. He’s so cute! I hope Lan
